Destination berth status and waiting time at anchorage

Destination berth status and waiting time at anchorage

The destination berth of a vessel being occupied at the time of arrival at the pilot station is one of the most important causes of waiting times at anchorage. It’s definitely not the only cause, but our analysis of waiting times at anchorage for the Port of Antwerp shows that there’s a clear correlation.

We divided the waiting times into a few categories and looked at the destination berth availability at the time of arrival at the pilot station for each category. For vessels that had to wait less than 2 hours, we see that the destination berth was occupied in 16,1% of the port calls. For vessels that had to wait more than 72 hours, the destination berth was occupied in 80,8% of the port calls.
